Burlap and Nailhead Trim Nightstand

~Thinking Outside The Box~

Burlap & Nailhead Trim Nightstand.
My new rustic makeover!

What to do with this shabby sad little guy?
I was staring at this piece for a good 10 minutes trying to figure out what color I wanted to paint today... I was thinking bright and fun.. but something kept saying "burlap, burlap!"
Sooo... I went outside the box on this one.

I knew I was going to distress it, so I just used Rustoleum Black Semi Gloss spray paint to put a coat on over most of the nightstand. Note; You don't have to do this pretty, just spray it on girls!

Next, I painted it with a coat of
CeCe Caldwell "Young Wheat".
It's a nice creamy, beige-ish, taupe-y kind of tan!
I'm loving this color right now!

Then I decided to cut some burlap to size on the sides since this piece was in ROUGH shape. Kind of this yucky plywood with huge gashes in it that I didn't want to fill with wood putty!
Fabric seemed like a good option.
I just used a razor knife.
Well, my helpful husband was off today and wanted to help...
so, I held the burlap down and HE used the razor knife :):)

Then I stapled it down with my pneumatic staple gun.
(Sooooo worth the $20 bucks!!!)

It looked like it needed something... hmmmm... I dug through my fabric stash, came up with some burlap webbing,
but I didn't have enough,
sooooo I improvised and cut in in 1/2 so I could get 4 strips out of it.

I then stapled the top down and hot glued it to the burlap.
It still needed something?
I had some upholstery tacks! They did just the trick.
I used a hammer to put them about 1 1/2 inches apart.
 (I just eye balled it)

I then used water and a paper towel to "water distress" the paint.
I just wet down my paper towel and rubbed of the paint to show the black underneath.
Yes girls, you can use water to distress CeCe Caldwell paint!!

I then wanted a more rustic finish, so I used Jacobean Minwax Stain and lightly brushed the whole piece.. with the burlap on it...
(the stain was an afterthought, I would suggest doing that before you put your fabric on. LOL)

I finished it off with some oil rubbed bronze knobs and I really love it! Ive never done anything like it and it was nice being "crafty" with fabric on a piece of furniture!

Its fun to think outside the box sometimes!

Happy Painting!!
Mindy~

  14. Just want you to know that this piece looks great next to my counter/sink in my bathroom. It holds my hand towls on top in a basket and my husband is excited to have a place where he can find his toothbrush easily without looking under the counter in a basket. I think he is more excited than me with this find. Thanks. Oh, I bought it from the Vintage Fair this past Sunday!
